How Far We Have Gone

Voyager 1

The NASA spacecraft which rose from Earth on a September morning in 1977, 43 years ago, has traveled farther than any human craft in history.

Voyager 1 is now in the Space between the Stars, Interstellar Space.

To put this distance into perspective, it takes a radio signal, which travels at the speed of light, 186,282 miles per second, approximately 34 hours to reach Voyager 1 from Earth.

The Golden Record

Voyager 1 also has on board one of the two Golden Records.

The Voyager Golden Records are phonograph records which were included aboard both Voyager spacecraft, which were launched in 1977.

They contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended to be found by any intelligent extraterrestrial life forms, or for future humans, if we can ever reach those distances

Voyager 1 is not heading towards any particular Star, but it will be within 1.6 light-years of the star Gliese 445, currently in the constellation Camelopardalis, in about 40,000 years.
